2018 Strength Solo Show

Artist Statement

Strength is an exploration of cultural and feminine identity as a first-generation Japanese immigrant. I aim to celebrate and share my Japanese heritage while breaking down common stereotypes and fetishization of Japanese women. By honoring the women in my life, I provide intimate portraits that show their strength, their individualism, and their multi-dimensionality.

The traditional kimono plays an important role in this discussion. In the west, there are very limited or fetishized associations with the kimono. I hope that depicting more modern or typical Japanese women will create different associations and initiate new dialogue.
